We would like to inform you about an important change regarding the recognition of travel documents issued by the Russian Federation, as announced by the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic on July 17, 2024.

What is changing?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic announced on July 3, 2024, that the Czech Republic will only recognise biometric travel documents issued by the Russian Federation. This change should increases security and better facilitate the identification of the passport holders.

Who is exempt?

  • Children under 15 years old
  • Individuals included in the Civil Society program
  • Holders of visas and residence permits granted in the interest of the Czech Republic

Transition period:

Until September 15, 2024, non-biometric passports will still be considered valid. After this date, it will be necessary to submit a biometric travel document for the issuance or extension of residence permits. In case the Russian national does not have a biometric travel document, he/she will be requested to provide one within a reasonable period, which can be extended.

How to recognize a biometric passport?

A biometric travel document contains machine-readable data and an electronic chip with biometric data, ensuring higher security and easier identification of the holder. The cover of a biometric passport also displays a chip symbol.

Important obligations:

The Russian Federation citizens with valid residence permits must obtain a biometric travel document and report the new document to the Ministry of the Interior within 3 working days.

Red Flags:

  • Obtaining a new Russian passport can take around 6 months or more.
  • The Russian embassy in the Czech Republic has very limited capacity, and appointments are difficult to secure.
  • Russian nationals often travel to other Russian embassies in the EU to obtain a new passport. Currently, Denmark is the only EU country that does not recognise non-biometric passports, but it is advisable to check travel conditions ahead of travel as this might change.
  • Russian nationals may face issues returning from non-Schengen countries, as airlines might not allow boarding if the passport is not recognized, regardless of a valid residence permit in the Czech Republic.
